A note on Appointment of Judges around the world
In India, although the method of selection of judges by a collegium of their colleagues sitting in the Supreme Court finds no place in the Constitution, which confers such powers to the President, judges are practically being appointed by their incumbent colleagues through the Collegium Method.
The Collegium Method was created as a result of the 1993 and 1998 judgments of the Supreme Court, when the apex court had rewritten the provisions of the Indian Constitution for the selection of judges by taking the power to appoint judges in its own hands.
