NDA government’s unique initiative to empower rural India

Sudhanshu MittalIt is quite clear by now that holistic development of the rural areas is the top priority of the NDA government. Even before completing 100 days in power, several pathbreaking initatives have been taken that would change the face and fate of rural India which was utterly neglected by the UPA government during last 10-years. Right from constructing toilets to bridging the digital divide, the priority is to empower the rural India so that its vast potential can be realised for the benefit of teeming millions who have been pushed to the periphery of the economy over the last 10 years by the policy deficit of the UPA government.

Ever since the NDA government took charge at the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , a major paradigm shift in the policy approach is visible when it comes to chalking out welfare programmes for the rural India. While the Congress led-UPA government was focusing mainly on undermining the capability of rural India by focusing only on doling out “subsidies” most of which were siphoned off due to poor delivery mechanisms, the NDA government is focusing on ‘empowering’ the rural India.

In this context, an important initiative which happened recently needs to be mentioned here. The Ministry of Textiles and online retail major Flipkart have joined together hands to promote the products of Indian weavers.

We all know that across the country small weavers, mostly concentrated in rural areas have been struggling for their livelihood for years. Through this agreement a floodgate of opportunities has been opened to them. It shows how this government is smartly using the technology tools to empower those who are at the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder.

It would be pertinent to mention a few more points about this tie-up, which I believe could be a trail blazer and game changer for similar sections of society who have been left out of the mainstream of development.

Through this exclusive agreement, Flipkart will provide weavers in India online marketing platform, infrastructural support in data analytics and customer acquisition to help them get remunerative prices for their products and scale up their business.
This kind of a coordinated effort has been planned and executed for the first time with Flipkart for handloom weavers which will bridge the missing linkages of market intelligence, market access and logistics and help the Indian weavers in getting remunerative prices for their products.

Flipkart will provide online marketplace for sale of the products of the weavers / master craftsmen/ national awardees/ state level awardees and the others as advised by Development Commissioner for Handlooms. Towards this end, they will go to the doorsteps of the above said since they do not have the brand, financial wherewithal to have a store leave aside in a town but not even in their village, no wherewithal to travel to market their products.

Flipkart or their business partners will also have a collection centers to collect their products.

Most importantly, the weavers will sell their products under their brand name and evolve as an entrepreneur selling his products directly to buyers across the country without stepping out of their workplace.
It is one of the most apt examples of putting into practice the guiding motto of the NDA government, “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”.

Saharanpur riots: Mischievous distortion of the truth

Sudhanshu MittalHypocrisy thy name is Samajwadi Party. A five-member committee headed by SP leader Shivpal Yadav set up to probe the causes of the communal violence in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh has mischievously distorted the real facts and levelled baseless allegations against BJP leaders.

Let us look at the gaping holes in the Yadav panel report. First, the committee comprised only SP leaders. The five-member inquiry committee was headed by Shivpal yadav with Shivakant Ojha (minister for technical education), minister for rural development Arvind Singh Gope and SP leaders Ashu Malik and Haji Ikram Qureshi.

The question is why no one from any other political party was made part of a probe panel? The report of the panel is a bundle of contradictions. Let me quote a news agency report dated July 30 based on statements given by senior officials of UP police,
“The main accused for instigating clashes in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh which left three people killed and dozens injured has been arrested along with six of his accomplices, police said on Thursday. Moharram Ali allegedly incited a mob to pelt stones and fire at the Sikhs and had opened fire at Sahastra Pal, a constable who is battling for his life in a city hospital. Danish, Mohd Irshad, Mohd Abid, Mohd Shahid and Haji Mohammed Irfan have also been arrested for inciting and abetting violence.”

The above news report was carried by almost all the newspapers channels and news websites. No one contradicted it. Now if the police had identified the accused and they were arrested, then how can the panel blame BJP MP Raghav Lakhanpal . In fact, till the report of the panel was submitted none of the police officials ever mentioned the name of any BJP leader.

I personally interacted with a number of journalists who had visited the area after the riots broke out on July 26 and there was unanimity that shops and establishments of Hindus and Sikhs were chosen and targeted in a well planned manner. A detailed report giving the true account of events has been published by weekly “Panchjanya”.

The report submitted by Shivpal Yadav panel also blames the local administration for failure . If the local administration failed then it is the UP government’s responsibility and if local administration failed then how can you blame the BJP leaders simultaneously.

-The fact is that ever since Akhilesh govt has come to power the state is sitting on a powder keg of communalism. There have been more than 300 riots last year alone. The adhoc approach of the government, its lack of grip over the law and order is quite visible. There is no fear of law and the focus is on minority appeasement instead of rule by the law.

In 2013, the NCRB data shows that UP had the second highest number of crimes against women:32,546 which is 10.51% of the total number of crimes against women in whole country.(The highest number of crimes against women were committed in another Congress ruled state-Andhra Pradesh in 2013 with 32,809 crimes.

In fact the blatant ‘appeasement’ and biased policies of the Akhilesh government in Uttar Pradesh need to be deplored as they are becoming increasingly responsible for driving a wedge between communities, a process further fuelled by the political machinations of the Samajwadi Party leadership.
